Unlike an x-ray, which only displays bones, an MRI shows all your body. Our open MRI is specifically developed for musculoskeletal problems. The clinician can see the bones, joints, cartilage, ligaments, and muscle. By focusing the MRI scanner solely on the musculoskeletal, accurate, clear, and precise images are obtained. MRI uses a very strong magnetic field which allows doctors to see inside your body in a way previously only possible through surgery. An MRI is sometimes unavoidable when it comes to diagnosing what is wrong with a patient, however most MRIs can be quite claustrophobic and uncomfortable due to the face they are closed in, and you must stay still for up to 90 minutes. At MSK doctors we have a solution to this problem with our Open MRI machine. It delivers the same level of accuracy as a traditional scanner; however, the sides of the scanner are open.
Another advantage to our open MRI scanner is that after the clinician has positioned the patient the scanning only takes around 40 minutes which is about half the time of what a closed scanner needs.
Open MRI scanners are also beneficial to those who have severe pain or reduced mobility, depending on what part of the body is being assessed it is possible for the patient to be sat during the scan as long and the movement is still minimal.
